FAQs about Building Passive Homes in Box Hill
Do I need council approval to build or renovate in Box Hill?
Most extensions and all new builds require a building permit; many also need a planning permit due to overlays in the City of Whitehorse. We assess this early and manage the approvals for you.
What makes a home “passive” and why is it worth it in Box Hill?
A passive home uses airtight construction, insulation, high-performance windows and MVHR to keep temperatures stable with minimal heating or cooling ideal for Melbourne’s climate and Box Hill’s leafy streets.
Can you retrofit my existing Box Hill home to passive standards?
Yes. We upgrade the envelope (membranes, insulation, glazing), improve airtightness, and add MVHR and efficient services. Where full certification isn’t practical, we target the biggest comfort and energy wins.
Do I need council approval to build or renovate in Box Hill?
Upfront costs can be higher for better windows and detailing, but running costs drop significantly. We provide itemised budgets so you can see payback and options clearly.
How long does a passive build or renovation take in Box Hill?
Timeframes depend on scope and approvals. After design and permits, allow a clear construction program; we share milestones and progress updates throughout.
What heating and cooling do you recommend?
We pair the passive envelope with high-efficiency split systems (or hydronic where suitable) and MVHR for clean, balanced fresh air with very low energy use.
Are there rebates for efficiency upgrades in Victoria?
Rebates for heat-pump hot water, efficient appliances and solar come and go. We point you to current schemes and help you plan around them.
